Mercury is a major Roman god, whose Greek counterpart is Hermes. Mercury is the patron god of financial gain, commerce, speed, eloquence, messages/communications, travelers, boundaries, luck, trickery and thieves. He is also the guide of souls to the Underworld. The Greeks envisioned Hermes as a crafty, cunning, and resourceful being. The Romans saw Mercury more as the god of commerce and trade rather than just being a god of thievery and travel.
